Smell Like Dirt

Rain Barrels

Its raining in the southeast and when it does, we gets lots of hits from people looking for information on how to buy rain barrels  I decided to do a short post so that the information is easy to access.  If you live in the Charlotte NC metro area, there are two easy ways to order rain barrels in April.  In Charlotte, order your rain barrels through Mecklenburg Soil and Water Conservation District but hurry, deadline to order is April 7.  If you miss that deadline and live near Matthews, Habitat and Wildlife Keepers (HAWK) and the Town of Matthews have teamed up to sell the same rain barrels at the same price as the county.  Send an email to HAWKncwf@gmail.com to order yours today, deadline April 15.  And if you don’t live close enough to the Charlotte area to take advantage of these sales, contact your local county extension office and ask where you can get a rain barrel .

I got a Cascata rain barrel for my backyard and it is simply gorgeous!

Hi. We bought a rain barrel (just like the one you show on your site) — from the city. Lately, it smells horrible — like a stink bomb. Two days ago, I used water from it in our potted plants and the plants STILL smell bad. Any ideas. There is a screen on it — it’s just like your rain barrel.

Sorry you are having trouble with your barrel.

I do not have a definitive answer of what went wrong, but I suggest that you completely empty the barrel, wash it out well with a diluted bleach solution (a tbsp to a gallon of water), rinse it will and start over again.

When you use the water, try to use it all the way up each time so that there’s no “old” water left in there.

Let me know if this solves the problem and if not, I’ll keep looking for a solution!

Thanks for contacting us and for conserving water.

My guess is that Stinky Rain Barrel has installed the garden hose assembly to high on the side of the barrel and the barrel never completely empties. The 55 gallon design offered at http://www.aquabarrel place the garden hose discharge at the lowest point of the barrel (under it) so you have less stuff remaining in the tank when you drain it. Their huge 80 gallon unit is what I’d really like to have for my b-day present next year (are you reading this dear?? – hint-hint)

A good heads-up! There’s a whole collection of info on building personal and large harvesting systems and barrels at raintankdepot.com for those fellow DIYers with dirty hands.
Good luck!
